In the Beginning: Virginia, Along the Trail of Enslaved Africans

As part of our shared commitment to remembrance and cultural connection, Altars Festival is proud to highlight this powerful experience led by Elegba Folklore Society.

This evolutionary and immersive guided journey follows the historic Trail of Enslaved Africans in Richmond. Participants will begin with a contextual visit to the Society’s Cultural Center, then travel by bus and foot along the path where enslaved Africans once arrived, were held, and ultimately laid to rest.

Through firsthand narratives and historical records, the experience invites reflection on the impact of enslavement and its continued resonance today.

Participants should wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and be prepared for extensive walking outdoors.
